In self-publishing your (e)book, do so as a professional author operating without publisher and/or agent. Ignore hearsay in the self-publishing community as well as unsubstantiated claims by self-proclaimed experts.

• Quality—not quantity—of works mark a true professional.
• Rushing a book to market is a mistake sometimes unrecoverable without extreme (costly) actions.
• After publication release, your reputation is at stake for present and past works bearing your name.
• Switching to a [new] pseudonym will not save you. You are then starting over in building reputation and readership.

These and other ill-advised practices separate a "self-publisher" [SP] from an "independent author" [IA]; these terms are not synonyms.

Become an IA through professional practices and publications of quality. The true measure of a (e)book valued by customers—only "readers" after a (e)book is "read"—is if the (e)book is read more than once by the same reader.

There is no greater mark of excellence and professionalism for any author of any type.
